演講題目：Opportunities and Pitfalls of Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research
摘要：
Biomedical research today is inherently multidisciplinary, it involves knowledge and insight into the underlying biology as well as in the medical background of the subject matter under study as well as methodological expertise about the methods used. Interdisciplinary research in order to be successful requires not only to incorporate teams scientists with in depth expertise about their own speciality, it is equally important that the scientists involved show sufficient and sincere interest and understanding into the relevant aspects of their collaborators.
With increasing insight into the inherent multi-parametric,multi-scale complexity of living systems – from the cellular level to society - new advances in computer science – machine learning and AI – is becoming increasingly important. Whereas it is unlikely that computers will replace scientists in the foreseeable future, it is very likely that the impact of science not making use of such developments will diminish. This should not be perceived as a threat but rather as an opportunity to explore new directions and areas not accessible to conventional methods.
